As seniors age, they may experience decreased mobility or health-related issues that make accessing and exiting vehicles more challenging. Fortunately, modern SUVs can be equipped with features to enhance accessibility. This article will shed light on ways to ensure that seniors’ SUVs are as accessible and comfortable as possible.
Low Entry and Exit Points:
Adjustable Suspension: Some advanced SUVs come with an adjustable suspension system that can be lowered, making it easier for seniors to step in and out.
Running Boards: These are flat steps that are installed below the doors. They provide an intermediate step, making the climb less steep for seniors.
Grab Handles: Positioned above the doors, these sturdy handles assist seniors when getting in or out of the SUV.
Seats and Positioning:
Swivel Seats: These can rotate, allowing the passenger or driver to sit down facing outwards and then turn into the vehicle.
Adjustable Seat Heights: Being able to raise or lower the seat can be immensely helpful in achieving the most comfortable position for both driving and getting in or out.
Lumbar Support: Proper lumbar support can make longer rides more comfortable, especially for seniors with back issues.
Door Features:
Automatic Sliding Doors: More common in minivans, these doors can be very helpful since they require less effort to open and close.
Wider Opening Angles: Doors that open wider can make it easier for seniors, especially if they use mobility aids like walkers or wheelchairs.
Keyless Entry: This allows seniors to unlock their SUVs without fumbling for keys, which can be especially handy if they have arthritis or hand mobility issues.
Control and Dashboard Ergonomics:
Large, Clear Buttons: Controls should be easily identifiable and accessible, reducing the need to stretch or lean.
Touchscreen with Large Icons: A clear and intuitive touchscreen interface can make it easier for seniors to access various features.
Steering Wheel Adjustments: Being able to adjust the steering wheel’s angle and reach can make a significant difference in driving comfort.
Parking and Maneuvering:
Rear-view Cameras: These provide a clear view of the area behind the SUV, making reverse parking or backing out safer and more comfortable.
Parking Sensors: They alert the driver if they’re too close to an object, reducing the chances of bumps and scrapes.
360-degree Camera Systems: This provides a bird’s-eye view of the SUV, making parking and maneuvering in tight spaces simpler.
Ensuring accessibility in seniors’ SUVs is paramount for their comfort and safety. Manufacturers today understand these requirements and are continually innovating to accommodate the needs of an aging population. By selecting SUVs with these features, or retrofitting existing vehicles, seniors can continue to enjoy the cheapdom of driving without compromising on ease and safety.
